January 22 & 25

  • Matthew 16:18

  • Acts 2:42, 47

  • Ephesians 3:6

  • The gospel creates a new family called the church.

  • Families can accidentally turn inward.

  • Ephesians 4:7, 10

  • God's plan to display the gospel to the world is the church.

  • Ephesians 4:11-12

  • The church is designed to be a family united by Christ and on mission for Christ.

  • The marks of a healthy church…maturity AND mission.

  • Ephesians 4:13-16

  • If the goal is only maturity, we’ll eventually turn inward and protect what we have. If the goal is only mission, we’ll burn out and lose our soul.

[d]Group Questions

  1. Read Acts 2:42-47 together as a group.

  2. “The church is not a meeting—it’s a miracle.” When you think about your own story, how has God used the church (Southern Hills or another) to bring transformation, healing, or growth in your life?

  3. Shannon described the church as an uncommon community—people brought together by Jesus who otherwise wouldn’t belong together. Where have you personally experienced this kind of gospel-centered unity? Where do you think it’s hardest for the church to live this out today?

  4. We talked about the danger of becoming a closed family instead of a growing one. What are some subtle ways churches—or even d-groups—can turn inward without realizing it? How do we guard against that?

  5. The marks of a healthy church are maturity and mission. Which of those do you feel God is currently growing in you—and which one might He be inviting you to lean into next?

Group Prayer Prompt

“Lord, help us grow up in Christ and grow outward in love, so others can find a place in Your family through us.”
