Week 4: Why Do You Worry About Your Friend's Speck?

August 28 & 31

  • Matthew 7:1-2

  • We are tempted to “play God” in the areas we feel godlike, while ignoring the areas we feel human.

  • Matthew 7:3

  • It’s hard to get well when we’re focused on everyone else.

  • We tend to judge people by their actions while we judge ourselves by our intentions.

  • Unconfessed sin warps our vision.

  • Matthew 7:4-5

  • Personal repentance…then godly restoration of others.

  • Galatians 6:1

  1. Start with confession.

  2. Invite accountability.

  3. Practice self-awareness before confrontation.

  4. Lead with grace.

  • Repentance sharpens our vision.

[d]Group questions

  1. Read Matthew 7:1-5 together as a group.

  2. Why do you think it’s so much easier to spot someone else’s “speck” than to recognize our own “log”? Can you share a time when this has been true in your life?

  3. Jesus warns us that “the standard we use” will be the standard given back to us (Matt. 7:2). How should that truth shape the way we show mercy, grace, and accountability toward others?

  4. What’s the difference between judging someone and restoring someone (Galatians 6:1)? How can we tell if our motivation is love or annoyance?

  5. What practical steps can we take this week to examine our own “logs” (blind spots, sins, excuses) before trying to address others’ “specks”?

Prayer Prompts

  1. Personal Repentance: Pray, “Lord, show me the logs in my own life. Search my heart and reveal blind spots I’ve been excusing. Give me humility to confess them and receive Your grace.”

  2. Grace Toward Others: Pray, “Father, help me see people not as projects, but as brothers and sisters made in Your image. Give me a spirit of gentleness and mercy as I walk with others toward freedom in Christ.”
