Week 3: Discerning

March 19 & 22

  • John 10:27

  • God speaks to his people.

  • “While the canon that we call scripture is closed, Heaven is anything but silent. The God about whom the first recorded words are, let there be light, who literally spoke the universe into existence, that God is not mute. He is still speaking.”
    John Mark Comer

  • How do we know God's voice?

  • God created both your mind and your heart and he will speak to both your mind and your heart.

  • “Hearing God is not a luxury for the few; it is a normal part of the relationship between God and His children.”
    Dallas Willard

  • 1 John 4:1 (ESV)

  • Ways to discern the voice of God.

[d]Group Questions

  1. Read John 10:27 together as a group.

  2. As we follow Jesus the Shepherd, there will be other voices calling for our attention. What other voices (culture, fear, desires, other people) are you tempted to follow other than God?

  3. 1 John 4:1 tells us to test the spirits to see if they are from the Lord. How do you stay grounded in Scripture to make sure you can test what is and isn't from God?

  4. Of the list of ways God has given us to discern, which one do you need to lean on? (Get quiet, align with scripture, discern in community, etc.)

  5. What step of obedience do you need to take to continue to allow the voice of God to speak in your life?

Group Prayer Prompt

Scripture tells us to ask God for wisdom. Pray as a group and ask the Lord to give you discernment in navigating how the Holy Spirit speaks to us.
